Sagamu, Ogun State, Nigeria
In a season where Green Lock FC is looking to make a statement in the Nigeria Nationwide League One (NLO), 18-year-old defensive midfielder Tobi Mohammed has emerged as the team’s unexpected attacking weapon, scoring crucial headers in back-to-back matches.
Matchday 1: A Bright Spot in Defeat
Despite Green Lock FC’s 2-1 loss to Grassrunners FC, Tobi announced his arrival in stunning fashion, rising above defenders to nod home the opening goal in just the 3rd minute. Though the team ultimately fell short, Tobi’s performance, a first-ever league appearance in the NLO, was a revelation:
- Constant Threat: Delivered 3 shots on target, 4 key passes and won 7 duels.
- Tactical Flexibility: Dropped deep to defend but surged forward to support attacks.
- Leadership: Organized midfield transitions.
Matchday 2: A Coming-of-Age Performance
Green Lock FC bounced back in style with a 4-0 thrashing of rivals Sagamu Rovers, and once again, Tobi Mohammed was at the heart of the triumph, scoring his second header in as many games to double the lead before halftime.
- Goal: A brilliant header in the 42nd minute, making an intelligent and timely run into the box before diving low to bury past a hapless goalkeeper.
- All-Action Display: Completed 89% of passes, made 3 tackles, and dictated tempo.

The Journey So Far
Early Beginnings
Born in Owo, Ondo State, Tobi discovered football at 14, drawn to the “joy of scoring goals and outsmarting opponents”. His earliest memories revolve around honing skills in local tournaments, where his tenacity and vision stood out.
Grassroots to Green Lock
Before joining Green Lock FC, Tobi cut his teeth at:
- Mmax FC: Learnt the basics of midfield play.
- FUOYE Dazzlers: Competed in university leagues, winning:
- 🥉 3rd place at the FASU All-African University Games (2024).
- 🥈 Runner-up in the Ekiti State League (2024) and Higher Institution Football League, HIFL (2022).
His 44 appearances and 17 goals as a deep-lying midfielder—a rarity for the position—caught the eye of Green Lock FC’s head coach, earning him a trial and eventual signing.
Breakthrough at Green Lock
Under Coach Bolarinwa Idris, Tobi has refined his game:
- Goal-Scoring Threat: Improved shooting accuracy (2 headers in 2 NLO games this season).
- Defensive Discipline: Now averages 5+ interceptions per game.
- Leadership: Setting the tempo of play and coordinating teammates in tactical strcuture.
Coach Idris’ Influence

“Tobi is a coach’s dream,” says Idris. “He absorbs instructions like a sponge. We’ve worked on his headers – now producing results, passing range and box-to-box timing, but his game-reading ability is natural. He’s the engine of our midfield.”
Teammates
Tobi names Idris Ibrahim, Adebayo Toheeb, and Kehinde Oni as teammates who push him hardest in training. “We compete daily—iron sharpens iron,” he grins.
In turn, Kehinde Oni marvelled, “Tobi’s a midfielder who scores like a striker! He’s rewriting his role.”
